WHAT IS ECZEMA?

Eczema is a common name referring to different types of skin inflammation, namely, atopic dermatitis. Eczema is non-contagious and appears as raised, dry, itchy skin rashes on the face, inner elbows and knees, as well as the hands and feet.

CAUSES OF ECZEMA

The direct causes of eczema are unknown but are influenced by genetic and environmental stressors and aggravated by oxidative free radicals. Eczema can become more intensified or lessen over time but can be a life-long disorder that is difficult to treat.

OXIDATIVE STRESS AND ITS AFFECT ON ECZEMA

In recent years, there has been numerous studies suggesting that oxidative stress plays a key role in dermatitis flare-ups. Oxidative stress damages the cellular structures of the skin, increases inflammation and downgrades the functions of the skin barrier leaving skin open to infection. Oxidative free radicals stemming from environmental, physical, and psychological stress can lead to eczema through skin dysfunction and the imbalance of its immune system.

THE POWER OF ANTIOXIDANTS FOR TREATING ECZEMA

Ever-increasing evidence shows that people with eczema have significantly higher levels of oxidative stress and lower levels of antioxidants. Studies show that higher antioxidant levels can stimulate the positive growth of cells such as ceramides to weaken the development of atopic dermatitis lesions. One of the most effective ways to reduce free radical production and enhance antioxidant abilities is to combine anti-inflammatory agents and antioxidants.

THE LIMITATIONS OF CURRENT TREATMENTS FOR ECZEMA

Many current dermatitis treatments on the market today lack high-enough combinations of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to be effective in the treatment of eczema. Furthermore, hydrocortisone, a steroid, and common eczema treatment can cause serious side effects such as skin inflammation, skin thinning, nausea, hormonal changes or dizziness to name only a few. Some standard eczema treatments can actually increase eczema lesions.
